In the traditional teaching of Ved\u0101nta, this framework is known as Pa\u00f1ca Ko\u015ba, meaning the five sheaths or coverings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The word <em>ko\u015ba<\/em> refers to a sheath, covering, container, or enclosing layer. The five ko\u015bas provide a method for examining embodied existence through the physical body, vital force, mind, intellect, and bliss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The primary source of this teaching is the Taittir\u012bya Upani\u1e63ad, particularly the <em>Brahm\u0101nanda Vall\u012b<\/em> of the K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a Yajurveda. The teaching presents a progressive movement from Annamaya to \u0100nandamaya. The body develops through nourishment, is maintained through nourishment, and eventually returns to the material elements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It includes the physical structures through which human existence is expressed, including the tissues, organs, limbs, and other gross constituents of the body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the perspective of Ved\u0101nta, the physical body is experienced as \u201cmy body.\u201d Since it can be known by the experiencer, it is treated as something distinct from the ultimate Self.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Annamaya Ko\u015ba = the physical, food-constituted sheath.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. It concerns the functions through which life operates in the embodied condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is subtler than Annamaya because the physical structure alone does not account for the functions associated with a living organism. Traditional Ved\u0101nta understands these vital activities through pr\u0101\u1e47a and its five principal divisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pr\u0101\u1e47a-\u015bakti also extends beyond the physical act of breathing. Breath serves as an important expression of pr\u0101\u1e47a, while the traditional concept encompasses a broader range of vital activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pr\u0101\u1e47amaya Ko\u015ba = the vital sheath constituted of the five pr\u0101\u1e47as and the five organs of action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. It is also associated with thoughts, desires, doubts, reactions, and emotional responses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The five organs of knowledge provide sensory information, while manas receives, coordinates, and processes that information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, an object is perceived through the senses. The mind recognizes it, develops attraction or aversion, and produces an appropriate mental response. These processes belong to the domain represented by Manomaya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Manomaya is subtler than Pr\u0101\u1e47amaya because it concerns the inner mental processing through which sensory experiences become conscious mental experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Manomaya Ko\u015ba = the mental sheath constituted of manas and the five organs of knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. This illustrates the function represented by Vij\u00f1\u0101namaya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is Vij\u00f1\u0101namaya Ko\u015ba?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vij\u00f1\u0101na refers to discriminative knowledge, understanding, or particularized knowledge. In this context, it is principally associated with buddhi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vij\u00f1\u0101namaya is subtler than Manomaya because it represents the faculty through which the individual understands, judges, discriminates, and makes decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ved\u0101nta still regards buddhi as something that can be known.
